Eating a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, inflammation and diabetes. Citrus fruits and berries are especially powerful for preventing disease. They’re a great source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants (nutrients that prevent damage in the body).
#1. Lemons – They contain Vitamin C and other antioxidants. Their flavonoids (plant pigments – yellow with lemons) have antibacterial, anticancer and antidiabetic properties. Use fresh lemon to flavor water or squeeze over salad or fresh fish.
#2. – Strawberries – They contain a high water content, potassium and their seeds have fiber too. Strawberries also contain many other essential vitamins and minerals for the body. Enjoy them best raw, added to yogurt or blended into a smoothie.
#3 – Oranges – They are one of the richest sources of vitamin C, which the body cannot produce on its own and are also packed with other essential vitamins and minerals too. They boost immunity by helping the body absorb iron from plant-based foods. Eat oranges fresh, through juice that is NOT from concentrate or grate orange peels into salad or yogurt.
#4 – Limes – They provide vitamin C, magnesium and potassium. Limes are also antibacterial and have antioxidants too. Use fresh lime to flavor water or add it’s juice to salad dressing or rice.
#5 – Grapefruit – They contain many essential vitamins and minerals for the body. Their flavonoids protect against some cancers, inflammation and obesity. Add grapefruit slices to salad or squeeze the juice to flavor water.
